Kerry Williamson to Write New Angelina Jolie Movie
January 14, 2010
Whatever Angie wants, Angie gets. And it looks like Angelina Jolie wants her some Patricia Cornwell.
According to Risky Business, Fox 2000 has tapped screenwriter Kerry Williamson to pen a starring vehicle for Jolie, based on crime novelist Corwell's heroin Dr. Kay Scarpetta, a forensic examiner and the protagonist of seventeen of the author's books, most recently 'The Scarpetta Factor,' which hit shelves this past October.
Rather than adapt a specific title, however, Williamson will reportedly draw from a number of Scarpetta's adventures. But Fox 2000, who bought the rights to the Cornwell books in April, hopes this will be the first film in a franchise for its Oscar-winning star.
Joile stars in the upcoming thriller 'Salt', which hits theaters in July. Williamson has scripted upcoming films for directors Alexander Payne ('Sideways') and Darren Aronofsky ('The Wrestler').
No word yet on production dates for the Cornwell adaptation.

Angelina Jolie to star as a younger Kay Scarpetta in film based on Patricia Cornwell's series
February 24,
After nearly 20 years of discussions, a film based on Patricia Cornwell's Kay Scarpetta series may begin shooting as early as Fall 2010. Rachel Abramowitz, in a February 23, 2010 Los Angeles Times article, credits the interest shown by actress Angelina Jolie in portraying medical examiner Kay Scarpetta as being the factor that "got the ball rolling after many years of starts and stops."
Actresses who have previously been considered for the Scarpetta role include Demi Moore and Kristin Scott Thomas. Cornwell herself once tried to persuade Jodi Foster to tackle the role.
Angelina Jolie has established her reputation in action films such as Salt (2010), Wanted (2008), Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005) and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001). In 1999 she appeared as Officer Amelia Donaghy in The Bone Collector, the film derived from the first book in Jeffery Deaver’s Lincoln Rhyme series.
Abramowitz adds that Fox 2000 will not base its film on any of Cornwell's books but will instead commission an original screenplay. Kerry Williamson, the screenwriter, explains the film's depiction of Kay Scarpetta as a much younger version of Cornwell's protagonist:
In the books, she's further along as a character, at the height of her career. In the screenplay, we bring her back to a time before that, when she's just charting her course, and trying to break the glass ceiling. She sees what society might consider her female traits -- intuition, compassion, instinct -- as a weakness in the real world. Yet that is where her power lies. Her evolution is into accepting that."
In its jettisoning of an older female mystery series character in favor of her younger version, Fox 2000 follows the same pattern with the Scarpetta film as Fox Television had with the series "Bones" – an offshoot of Kathy Reichs' Temperance Brennan series. Although Abramowitz quotes the 53-year-old Cornwell as saying, "I can understand why the studio doesn't want to launch her as someone's who's my age," readers who have followed the seventeen Kay Scarpetta books may regret the substitution of a struggling novice for a seasoned professional.
